VCR screen effect
For this image I duplicated the original layer three times and colorised each layer with cyan, red and green respectively with 100 percent saturation, then I nudged each layer slightly to the left or right to create a ghosting effect. I then duplicated the original layer, moved it to the top, and lowered the opacity until the RGB effect was slightly visible. I created the scan line overlay by creating a single line in a new document and saving it as a pattern (following this tutorial) After this I merged all layers but this one. I also added a subtle diffuse glow, emphasising the grainy texture, then on the merged photo layer I selected small strips of the image and stretched them slightly to the right and left, adding noise to the selections. I learned this technique by following this tutorial.
I think it creates a really interesting effect however it looks really busy with all the scratches and paint smudges which also don't really make sense in the context of a VCR still. I think this edit would have been much more successful if I hadn't edited the original photograph so much. (One of the downsides of working traditionally I suppose.)
Perhaps this effect will work better on an illustration... It may create the idea of a still from a 90s animated cartoon?

Black & White contrast
I thought this photo had a really nice balance in dark and light values so I decided to really push them. I changed the photo to black and white and added an S curve contrast in the curves window. I know black and white images are a bit overdone/cheesy sometimes but I think it really draws attention to the range of interesting textures in this image.

Photo overlay
For this image I used a photo of my brother's band performing and overlaid on to one of my heavily scratched photos. I really like the positioning of the scratches over the faces of the band mates and the vagueness of the images in the background.
I quite liked the composition of this image on its own so didn't want to edit it to heavily. I achieved the "vintage" effect by heightening the blue and red values and lowering the saturation slightly.
