I think the gritty effect the fine liners have work well as a small image, however up close they appear messy and dirty (though this may also be partly due to my dodgy scanner.) I need to work on having more organised line work as the detail inside the hair is just distracting whilst the loose, straight line style of shading (under the neck, eyes and the sides of the face) have a visually appealing uniform look whilst still helping to convey form. The flat colour works well here however the dark gradient from the bottom of the image may throw off the viewer. Another issue is that the portrait doesn't really look like me. I need to improve at conveying people's features in a minimalistic way, perhaps by studying the spacing and directions of facial features more closely in future.
